New Brunswick regulations for kennels, shelters, pet stores now in effect.

Under the new regulations, kennels will be required to adhere to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations.

The regulations will also spell out in detail the standards for retail pet stores and animal shelters.

The changes replace various municipal animal control bylaws across the province and makes New Brunswick one of the few provinces in Canada with such detailed pet establishment regulations.

Byrne said the specifics in the regulations will make it less likely that the court system will dismiss animal cruelty charges.
