Definitive research

Calgary researcher gives talk on coyotes.

Much of her talk was dedicated to breaking down popular notions of coyotes and their behaviour. And the cartoon character, the Roadrunner’s nemesis, Wile E. Coyote, was used to get across an important feature of coyotes’ lives.

“He’s the guy that always gets banged down, banged down, banged down and always pops up again,” Alexander said. And there is more truth to this than many realize, she explained. Coyotes display high demographic compensation and efforts to control coyote populations by lethal means or culls see better breeding by coyotes, and populations expand.

“The research is definitive,” she said. “Lethal control doesn’t work.”
