Exotic encounter

East African Gaboon viper subject of Ontario’s latest snake story.

Just over three years ago a cobra escaped its enclosure and slithered loose in a rooming house in the Weston Road and Lawrence area.

Just a few weeks earlier, a Barrie man was bitten by his friend’s pet viper. A snake expert had to be rushed in from a reptile zoo in Peterborough to provide a rare anti-venom.There are no federal rules against importing snakes that aren’t endangered. It’s up to municipalities to ban them.
