New shelter

Vaughan gets animal shelter.

The cost of the new shelter is $350,000 and is included in the city’s 2010 capital budget.

The cost of operating the facility is $90,000 which includes rent, utilities and a management contract.
Ms Jackson hopes to make the shelter revenue neutral over the long term and possibly have other businesses such as pet grooming and pet stores in the same area.

According to a city report, in 2008 some 520 cats and 220 dogs were impounded from Vaughan.
