Bird bust

U.S. bird collector caught smuggling cheap Canadian canaries.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection say a 41-year-old man drove across the bridge Dec. 15 and said he was returning from a one-day trip to visiting friends in Toronto. He claimed he had nothing to declare.

During initial questioning, however, the subject aroused the suspicion of officers and was referred for an enforcement exam.

Five canaries were found inside a wooden box hidden behind the passenger seat.

The motorist later admitted he is a collector of birds, allegedly having over 200 birds at his home in Oceanside, N.Y.
