Toronto Humane Society

In the red.

According to financial documents from August obtained by the Star, the humane society owed more than $750,000 to businesses, ranging from a lab equipment supplier to a marketing firm. While several companies received payments in the fall, many owners say they’re still out thousands of dollars.

The shelter has been under the control of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals since Nov. 26, when investigators raided the River St. facility and led THS president Tim Trow and four senior staff members off in handcuffs. They have all been charged with animal cruelty.

The unpaid bills point to the increasingly apparent disorganization at the shelter.
