Dogs in prison

Nova Institution for Women’s Pawsitive Directions program, which teaches inmates to train service dogs, will continue.

A Correctional Service Canada spokesman said Friday there was never any intention of cancelling the program.

The rehabilitative program won international acclaim over the years, helped mentally and physically challenged people, rescued shelter dogs and helped inmates.

“We would never cancel that program,” said Etienne Chiasson, Atlantic regional spokesman for Corrections Canada.

“It is a program that has proven to be very worthwhile over the years.”
