OSPCA Act tests

Cat euthanized following abuse, owners charged under OSPCA Act.

Jagt and Webb have been charged under the newly amended Ontario SPCA Act which took affect on March 1.

The OSPCA is able to press charges against pet owners who abuse or neglect their animals, without having to get city police involved.

The owners face several animal cruelty charges, including causing distress to an animal, failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical care and allowing an animal to remain in distress.

If convicted, the pair could face fines of up to $60,000, two years imprisonment and/or a lifetime ban on animal ownership.

Dog seized, owner charged with animal cruelty by Toronto Police.

The owner, whose name was not released, was charged by Toronto Police with animal cruelty. If convicted, the man could be sentenced to two years in jail, face a $50,000 fine and have a lifetime ban from owning a pet.
