“What is good and fair”

Winnipeg debates gestation crates for sows.

Prof. Laurie Connor asked the crowd to look at another picture of a sow in a gestation stall.

“Are we focusing on the bars or looking at the pig?” asked Connor, with the department of animal science at the U of M. A person’s background, values and world view will indicate what they see, she said.

“Some will be focused on the bars, others will see a clean animal, good body condition, alert and who appears to be eating,” said Connor, who has chaired a provincial committee devising a code of practice for care and handling of farm animals.
